​Rutgers Initiative for Sensory Sciences and Innovation

The vision of the Initiative for Sensory Sciences and Innovation (SSI) is to create new approaches to health and behavioral research by leveraging multidisciplinary inputs from interrelated disciplines, on a campus-wide basis.

The mission is to improve understanding of taste and smell perception in health, well-being and behavior.

Building on Rutgers strengths, the Initiative includes:

  • Top researchers in aroma, flavor discovery and chemistry
  • Taste and olfactory genetics
  • Molecular and cellular biology
  • Behavioral neuroscience and neurobiology
  • Informatics and high performance computing
  • Perception
  • Emotion
  • Psychology
  • Environmental and ecological sustainability

By facilitating university-industry research collaborations to engage industrial members in its guidance, the Initiative is intended to produce basic knowledge and novel methodologies that member companies can later develop and apply to their individual needs and interests.
